Pass the Plate
Shop Notes:
Pass the Plate: A Collection From Christ Church in New Bern, North Carolina is a wonderful church cookbook. I'm actually not even giving it enough credit. It's a wonderful regional cookbook published by one church, but contains recipes and histories of several churches around the area, including the local Temple Chester B'Nai Sholem who has maintained a congregation in New Bern since 1824.
The recipes themselves are delightful and useful appetizers, entrees, and desserts from the past few decades. Some of the appetizers make me want to dash down to my kitchen to have things like Sausage Balls in Pastry Blankets (with curry, nutmeg, and sage) ready for cocktails this evening, another adds a welcome sweet date component to the traditional Southern Sausage Ball. The salad chapter contains far more than standard congealed salads, including a Spiced Grapefruit Salad that looks like a must try. The Seafood Chapter contains a variation of Stuffed Flounder with Crab or Clams (also known in neighboring Carteret County as "Christmas Flounder"). Overall, this is really a delightful regional cookbook.
