Shop Notes:
This cookbook is a wonderful collection of recipes, but what is most heartfelt are the local establishments, public servants, and celebrities who supported the AIDS Service Agency at a time when there was still a lot of stigma around 1980s/1990s HIV/AIDS pandemic and its victims.*
While the recipes in this book are truly wonderful, there is a deep love of people and a love of community within these pages. The Angus Barn's Chocolate Chess Pie is in here, an Indonesian Salad with Spicy Peanut Dressing from k.d. lang, and a Chinese Chicken Salad from Raleigh-native and Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin, and recipes from numerous political figures like Al Gore, NC Governer Jim Hunt, and David Price. There are even many, many recipes from agency volunteers and local church groups.
*NOTE: I am not an expert in this area, but while the HIV/AIDS pandemic is still active, many modern treatment regimens have made HIV/AIDs more of a chronic condition rather than a terminal illness. As such, much of the fear and stigma surrounding the disease in the 1980s and 1990s has abated, thankfully.
From the Publishers:
This cookbook is dedicated to the people we have lost to AIDS, those with HIV and AIDS, and the volunteers that offer their constant support and love to them. We hope that you enjoy this book for years to come. And when you sift through its pages to create palate pleasant nourishment, you will know that you have generously contributed to creating a better world.
